Kawad Yatra 2026 Start Date: Thursday, July 30, 2026 Kawad Yatra 2026 End Date: Tuesday, August 11, 2026 (Sawan Shivratri) Sawan Jal Date 2026 (Jalabhishek day): August 11, 2026 Dak Kawad Dates: August 9 to 11, 2026 Main Gangajal Sources: Haridwar (Har Ki Pauri), Gaumukh, Gangotri (Uttarakhand) and Sultanganj (Bihar) Devotees: Primarily from Delhi, UP, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Bihar Chant: Bol Bam  Har Har Mahadev

What Is Kawad Yatra and Why Is It Done

Kawad Yatra is an annual pilgrimage of Lord Shiva's devotees performed during the sacred Sawan month. The word Kawad refers to the bamboo pole that devotees carry on their shoulders, with pots of holy Gangajal hanging from both ends. The devotees who undertake this journey are called Kanwariyas.

The journey begins at a sacred Ganga source  primarily Haridwar, Gaumukh, or Gangotri in Uttarakhand, or Sultanganj in Bihar  where Kanwariyas fill their pots with holy water. They then walk back to their home temple and pour the Gangajal over the Shivling on Sawan Shivratri, performing jalabhishek as a mark of devotion.

The spiritual logic is direct: Lord Shiva drank the Halahala poison during the Samudra Manthan to save creation, and his throat burned with the heat of the poison. Devotees believe that pouring Gangajal over the Shivling recreates the act of cooling Shiva's burning throat  an act of gratitude and love that goes back thousands of years.

Nearly 2 crore devotees participate in Kawad Yatra every year, making it one of the largest religious congregations in North India.

Kawad Yatra 2026 Key Dates

Kawad Yatra Begins: Thursday, July 30, 2026 First Sawan Somwar: Monday, August 3, 2026 Second Sawan Somwar: Monday, August 10, 2026 Dak Kawad Period: August 9 to 11, 2026 Sawan Shivratri (Jal Date): Tuesday, August 11, 2026 Kawad Yatra Ends: Tuesday, August 11, 2026

5 Types of Kawad Yatra  Which One Are You?

1. Samanya Kawad The most common type. Devotees walk at a comfortable pace, resting at camps along the route, and complete the journey within the Sawan month. Best for first-timers.

2. Dak Kawad The most intense type. Devotees run or walk non-stop without putting the kawad down, completing the journey in 24 to 36 hours. The Gangajal must reach the Shivling without touching the ground. Dak Kawad in 2026 runs August 9 to 11.

3. Khadi Kawad The kawad pole is never placed on the ground  devotees take turns holding it even while resting, sleeping, or eating. Considered extremely demanding and a mark of deep devotion.

4. Jhanki Kawad Devotees create elaborate decorated floats or tableaux on vehicles depicting scenes from Shiva's life or mythology. These travel in procession and are a visual spectacle along the highways.

5. Dandi Kawad The most physically demanding type. Devotees perform Sashtang Dandavat  a full prostration, lying flat on the ground  after every single step forward, for the entire distance.

Major Kawad Yatra Routes in 2026

Route 1  Haridwar to Home Temple (most common) Devotees from Delhi, Haryana, West UP, and Rajasthan travel to Har Ki Pauri in Haridwar, fill their kawad with Gangajal, and walk back home.

Route 2  Haridwar to Neelkanth Mahadev Devotees collect water from Haridwar and perform abhishek at the sacred Neelkanth Mahadev temple in the hills above Rishikesh.

Route 3 Gangotri or Gaumukh to Home For the most dedicated Kanwariyas, the journey begins at the Ganga's source at Gaumukh glacier or Gangotri.

Route 4  Sultanganj to Baidyanath Dham (Bihar) Devotees from Bihar, Jharkhand, and Bengal collect water from Sultanganj and walk 109 km to Baidyanath Dham in Deoghar, one of the 12 Jyotirlingas.

Rules Every Kanwaria Must Follow

Wearing saffron clothes throughout the yatra is mandatory  it represents purity and devotion to Shiva.

The kawad must not touch the ground from the moment the Gangajal is collected until it is poured on the Shivling. If it touches the ground, the water must be collected again.

Devotees observe a strict vegetarian diet and avoid onion, garlic, alcohol, and non-vegetarian food throughout the yatra.

Chanting Bol Bam or Har Har Mahadev must be maintained throughout the walk.

Bathing in the Ganga before collecting the water is compulsory.

The kawad must be offered on Sawan Shivratri  August 11, 2026.

What Kanwariyas Carry

The bamboo pole with two pots for Gangajal is the core of the kawad setup. Beyond that, most Kanwariyas carry a small personal puja kit including camphor, incense sticks, belpatra, chandan, roli, and a small diya for prayers along the route.
