What Is Raksha Bandhan & Why Is It Celebrated?

Raksha Bandhan  literally "the bond of protection"  is a Hindu festival observed on the full moon (Purnima) of the Shravan month every year. The ritual is simple: a sister ties a sacred thread called Rakhi on her brother's wrist, performs a small puja, and prays for his long life and wellbeing. In return, the brother vows to protect and support her, and typically gives her a gift or shagun.

But the meaning goes deeper than a sibling ritual. The word raksha means protection, and bandhan means bond  so at its heart, this is a festival about sacred relationships and the responsibility that comes with love. Traditionally, the Rakhi thread (or Raksha Sutra) is seen as a protective kavach  a spiritual shield for the person who wears it.

The festival also carries mythological depth. One of the most well-known stories traces back to Goddess Lakshmi, who tied a simple cotton thread on King Bali's wrist  not to bind him, but to remind him of the vow he had made to Lord Vishnu. Another popular legend involves Goddess Yamuna tying a thread on her brother Yama's (the god of death) wrist, after which Yama declared that any man with a Rakhi on his wrist would be protected from untimely death.

Raksha Bandhan 2026 Shubh Muhurat  Key Timings

Timing Details
Festival Date Friday, August 28, 2026
Purnima Tithi Begins 9:08 AM on August 27, 2026
Purnima Tithi Ends 9:48 AM on August 28, 2026
Shubh Muhurat (Rakhi tying) 5:57 AM to 9:48 AM on August 28
Bhadra Kaal Ends before sunrise — no conflict
Rahu Kaal (avoid) 10:46 AM to 12:22 PM

What this means in simple terms: This year is simpler than most. The Bhadra period — which traditionally makes families wait for an auspicious window — ends before sunrise on August 28, so the entire morning is open and clear. Start as early as you like after sunrise, and aim to finish the Rakhi ceremony before 9:48 AM for the most auspicious result. If you miss the morning window, avoid Rahu Kaal (10:46 AM–12:22 PM) and tie the Rakhi in the afternoon or evening instead.

How People Celebrate Raksha Bandhan

  • At home (most common): The sister prepares a puja thali with Rakhi, diya, roli-chawal, sweets, and flowers. The brother sits facing east, covers his head with a handkerchief or cloth, and the sister performs a small aarti, applies tilak, and ties the Rakhi.
  • With cousins and extended family: In many families, especially in North India, cousins are included  the bond of rakhi extends beyond just biological siblings.
  • When the brother is far away (NRI families): Sisters send Rakhi by post or courier weeks in advance, and many families do a live video call on the day itself  the sister performs the puja at home while the brother holds his wrist toward the camera.
  • Rakhi in temples and ashrams: Some communities tie Rakhi to the Bhagwa Dhwaj (sacred saffron flag) or to a deity's idol, symbolising a collective vow of protection.
  • For those who don't have brothers: In some traditions, sisters tie Rakhi to a male cousin, neighbour, or family friend they consider a brother figure.

Raksha Bandhan Puja Vidhi  Step by Step

  1. Wake up early and take a bath before the puja. Wear clean, fresh clothes  traditionally a saree or suit for sisters, and a kurta for brothers.
  2. Prepare the puja thali. Arrange the Rakhi, a small diya, roli, chawal (rice), kumkum, flowers, sweets (mithai), and a lota of water on the thali. Some families also keep camphor and incense.
  3. Light the diya and incense to begin.
  4. Seat the brother facing east. He should cover his head with a clean cloth, handkerchief, or dupatta  tying Rakhi without covering the head is considered incomplete in many traditions.
  5. Apply tilak. The sister applies a roli-chawal tilak on her brother's forehead.
  6. Tie the Rakhi. The sister ties the sacred thread on the brother's right wrist, saying a simple prayer for his long life, good health, and happiness. The mantra commonly recited is: "Yena baddho Baali raaja, daanavendro mahaabalah. Tena twaam anu badhnaami, raksha maa chala maa chala." (With this Raksha Sutra I bind you, just as the mighty King Bali was bound  may this protect you and never break.)
  7. Perform aarti. The sister moves the diya in a circular motion in front of her brother.
  8. Offer sweets. The sister feeds her brother his favourite mithai.
  9. Brother gives shagun/gift. In return, the brother gives his sister a gift, cash, or simply places his hand on her head in blessing.

Common Mistakes to Avoid on Raksha Bandhan

  • Tying Rakhi during Rahu Kaal. Even though Bhadra ends before sunrise this year, avoid the Rahu Kaal window (10:46 AM–12:22 PM on Aug 28).
  • Brother not covering his head. Many families skip this step  but covering the head during the Rakhi ceremony is considered a mark of respect and is part of the traditional vidhi.
  • Using a thali without a diya. The diya and aarti are not optional  they are what make this a puja and not just a thread-tying ritual.
  • Tying Rakhi on the left wrist. The Rakhi is always tied on the right wrist  the same wrist on which protective threads (raksha sutra) are traditionally worn.
  • Forgetting the tilak. Roli-chawal tilak before tying the Rakhi is part of the ritual  skipping it makes the ceremony incomplete.
  • Sending Rakhi too late. If your brother is in another city or country, post the Rakhi at least 2–3 weeks before August 28 to avoid late delivery.

FAQs

1. When is Raksha Bandhan in 2026? Raksha Bandhan 2026 falls on Friday, August 28.

2. What is the shubh muhurat for tying Rakhi in 2026? The auspicious window is 5:57 AM to 9:48 AM on August 28, 2026. This year Bhadra Kaal ends before sunrise, so the entire morning is open.

3. What is Bhadra Kaal and why should we avoid it for Raksha Bandhan? Bhadra (also called Vishti Karana) is an inauspicious period in the Hindu panchang. Scriptures advise against performing auspicious rituals  like tying Rakhi  during this time. In 2026, Bhadra ends before sunrise on August 28, so there is no conflict.

4. Can I tie Rakhi after the muhurat ends at 9:48 AM? Yes. If you miss the morning window, avoid Rahu Kaal (10:46 AM–12:22 PM) and tie the Rakhi in the afternoon or evening. The ritual is valid  the muhurat window simply gives the most auspicious result.

5. On which wrist should Rakhi be tied? Always on the right wrist of the brother.

6. What items should be in a Raksha Bandhan puja thali? A Rakhi, diya, roli, chawal, incense, flowers, camphor, sweets, and water. See the full samagri table above.

7. Can Raksha Bandhan be celebrated between cousins? Yes. In Indian tradition, the festival often extends to cousins (bhaiya-behen), and many families include cousins, neighbours, or close family friends who are considered like siblings.

8. Can I do Raksha Bandhan puja if my brother is in another city? Yes. Send the Rakhi by post in advance, and do a live video call on the day. The sister performs the puja at home and symbolically ties the Rakhi toward the screen. Many NRI families follow this practice regularly.

10. Is fasting required on Raksha Bandhan? Fasting is not mandatory, but some sisters keep a fast until after the Rakhi ceremony is complete and they have eaten sweets from their brother's hands.

11. What should the brother do during the Rakhi ceremony? He should sit facing east, cover his head, receive the tilak and Rakhi with his right hand extended, and give a gift or blessing to his sister in return.

12. Can a girl tie Rakhi if she has no brother? Yes. Many women tie Rakhi to a male cousin, a close family friend, a neighbour, or even a deity like Lord Krishna, considering them a brother figure.
